Breanna Sheather
Gorgeous skin starts with a healthy, nourishing diet. In fact, it is the foundation of a great beauty regime. Your skin reflects how healthy you are on the inside and we believe it’s all about reducing toxins and unnecessarily chemicals in your body. By now, you have most likely realised your diet from 10 years ago just isn’t cutting it anymore! As your body transitions into the next stage of life as does your nutrient requirements and junk food threshold…
So now we have gotten the “you are what you eat” badinage out of the way, let’s discuss the 5 foods to eat for a more youthful glowing complexion.
What to eat:
- Avocado
- Strawberries
- Kale
- Salmon, Sardines and anchovies
- Blueberries
What to avoid:
- Processed foods
- Refined carbohydrates (no more cakes, biscuits and pastries)
- Fatty and fried foods
- Too much salt
- Too much alcohol
- Too much sugar!!
Avocado’s are Anti-ageing. A fresh avo is jammed packed with antioxidants like lutein and beta carotene and over twenty vitamins and minerals including one essential skin loving vitamin. Vitamin E helps to fight free radicals which contribute to the ageing process. If we can fight off the free radicals we can essentially slow down and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Although this darling of the diet world won’t replace a thorough skin care routine, it will certainly help improve your overall glow.
Strawberries help brighten your skin tone. Did you know, one cup of strawberries contain 149% of your daily value of Vitamin C? Which is a higher amount than grapefruits or oranges. Once again, Vitamin C basically fights free radicals which break down collagen, to essentially slow down the appearance of ageing. Here’s a beauty tip, if you apply strawberries to your face, their rich alpha-hydroxy acid can naturally exfoliate dead skin cells while their omega-3 fatty acids can help to lighten your skin tone.
Kale is an underdog beauty regime extrodinaire! is loaded with vitamin C, vitamin A and vitamin K which help repair skin tissues, prevent free radical damage and give you a radiant and fresh look.
Salmon, Sardines and anchovies are some of the oceans richest sources of Omega-3s. Research shows that wrinkle development is rooted in inflammation. “Inflammatory chemicals are essentially like acid rain on the collagen of your skin. Omega-3s turn down the dial on the production of these chemicals”. In fact, The American College of Nutrition found that people who ate diets high in fish and seafood had less skin wrinkling. Omega-3s can also help reduce other skin inflammation such as acne. If you’re not a fan of eating fish, try taking some omega 3 supplements instead.
Blueberries contain the most antioxidants per serving of any fruit. Not only will those antioxidants keep your skin looking young and smooth, but blueberries also protect against memory loss, cardiovascular disease and cancer. So while they're a potent skin elixir, they'll certainly help the rest of your body stay young and healthy as well.
