How to equalise your skin!
Breanna Sheather
If you are eating clean, following a great skin care routine and your skin is still causing you grief, there may be something you are missing. In fact, most women don’t even consider an out of control pH balance to be the cause. This article is all about balancing your skin’s pH level. Skin Nutrient will help you discover whether your skin is alkaline or too acidic, why your somewhat irritating complexion is off balance and how to resolve the issue!
The Facts:
- Skin’s ideal pH balance is 5.5
- Alkaline skin can mean more wrinkles and sun damage
- Soap may be causing skin to be alkaline
- Alpha Hydroxy acids could be causing skin to be too acidic

Let’s start with the basics, pH stands for “potential hydrogen” it is way of measuring and describing the acid to alkaline ratio of a substance. Ranging from 0 (being the most acidic) to 14 (the most alkaline). Our saliva and urine tend to have a pH of 6.4-6.8, whereas the blood and tissues of the body should remain between 7.2 and 7.4.
The ideal skin pH is slightly more acidic than the rest of your body, according to New York dermatologist Patricia Wexler: "To work its best, the acid mantle should be slightly acidic, at a 5.5 pH balance. When it's too alkaline, skin becomes dry and sensitive; you may even get eczema. You may also experience inflammation, which inhibits the skin's ability to ward off matrix metalloproteinases [MMPs], the enzymes that destroy collagen and cause wrinkles and sagging." Balancing your skin’s pH level becomes more difficult with age.
The issue skin being alkaline: Research has shown people whose skin is alkaline tend to develop more fine lines, deeper crows feet and are far more prone to sun damage than those with acidic skin. Find this information a little bit confronting, I know we did.
Possible cause of alkaline skin: Regular soap or even basic, over bearing skin cleansers. When you apply products that are alkaline, you are actually damaging the top layer of the skin. Causing the barrier function to become disrupted, leading to dry skin and even weakening your skin’s natural antibacterial defense process. This can happen after just one wash and is even more apparent if you have sensitive skin.
What happens when skin is too acidic? Because our skin is slightly more acidic to being with, it is rarer to have overly acidic skin. However if your skin is too acidic, the effect is nasty inflamed pimples and zits! Even for people who “never” suffer from acne. No one should suffer from red, painful skin.
Possible cause of overly acidic skin: Are you using skin care with alpha hydroxy acids? Have your recently had a cosmetic peel? Or put simply, are you using skincare solutions made with lemon, grapefruit or citrus fruit?
Although these ingredients make for incredibly effective exfoliating, peels and skin brightening agents, they can actually cause chemical burns and are most likely causing your skin’s pH to become overly acidic. You don’t have to stop using them entirely, however it would be suggested to place these products in your “once a month” drawer. If your skin is alkaline, these once a month products will definitely help your cause, by boosting your overall skin texture, pumping up cell turnover, and keeping the acid mantle in check.
